Emerald Downs

On Saturday Amanda, Marie and I went to Emerald Downs. Carrie had some free passes from work, but couldn’t go because she had to work (lame right?). It was a ton of fun watching the races, and we even did a bit of gambling and bet on our favorite horses. We had beautiful weather and the atmosphere at the track was awesome. So much excitement with people cheering for their horses and then tearing up their tickets when they lost. It was like being in a movie at times.

Garlic Fries

It was odd; the few times we placed bets on the horses we thought would win, our horses came near dead last, but the times we didn’t bet, the horses we picked would win. The last race was particularly funny. The horse I favored (J.T. Rocks) was predicted to do poorly (based on a cheat sheet we were given) and it had the worst odds. Unfortunately I didn’t bet on that race! Had I, my $2 bet would have brought in nearly $40.  One of coolest things about the track is the food. We got ourselves an order of garlic fries (pictured to the left) and enjoyed every last one.

Unfortunately none of us got rich betting on the ponies so I went to work today as scheduled. 😉 Sunday was quieter for us. We got a few things done around the apartment, did some Seattle neighborhood exploration (by car), and bought a few more essentials that we were still missing. We’re planning on a bus ride adventure downtown soon (Marie has her ORCA card now).

Three weeks later

Drumheller Fountain

Drumheller Fountain

The picture to the left is Drumheller Fountain. It’s right outside Mary Gates Hall (the building I work in) and on a clear day like today, you can see Mount Rainier in the distance. Unfortunately it doesn’t show up as well in the photo as it does in person.

I’ve been working at the University of Washington for three weeks already. Time has been flying by so quickly! There’s so much for me to work on and so much for me still to learn that I’ve been more than keeping busy. Work has been really great so far. Everyone I work with is pretty much awesome and the job itself is what I enjoy doing, so things are great.

The weather here in Seattle has been outstanding. For a little while we had low 70s and cloudy drizzly days, but that wasn’t really all that bad in my book (sure beats 90+ and muggy). This forecast though, oh my goodness. This is what I would call absolutely perfect. Warm mostly sunny days with cool nights. The humidity here is really low compared to Michigan summers too!

Weather forecast - Week of 7/29

We’ve been busy almost every night so far too. Between dinners with friends and families and exploring the area and taking care of miscellaneous stuff, we haven’t had a lot of time to just hang out at home. It’s been a ton of fun and I expect it will continue to be!

A quick summary of things we’ve done this week:

  • We made Raspberry jam!
  • Lunch at Ivar’s at Pike Place Market with Marie’s mom Carrie and sister Amanda to celebrate Marie’s birthday.
  • Had dinner at Outback with Marie’s dad Larry to celebrate Marie’s birthday.
  • Hung out with Martin (one of my new coworkers) and his wife Shelly at their place and had some awesome pizza from Zaw.
  • We made a trip up to the cabin to drop off some boxes.
  • Marie went out and registered our cars and got us some Washington license plates.
  • Went out to dinner at Costa’s on the Ave (Greek restaurant) with Carrie and Amanda to celebrate Carrie’s birthday.

Each of those really deserve their own blog post, but we’ve just been so busy! Sorry everyone, we’ll try to post more often. In fact, we’ll post tomorrow for sure; we have a fun outing planned!

Mmm… raspberries!

One of the best parts of summer is enjoying fresh produce and one of my favorite things from childhood was eating raspberries off of Grandma and Grandpa’s raspberry bushes. 🙂 The trick when gathering raspberries is that for every two you eat, you put one in the gathering bowl. 😉

So, we went to Grandma and Grandpa’s this evening to pick berries from the raspberry bushes. Grandma and Grandpa told us how to make raspberry jam and we went to the store to get a few things that we will need to make it. We came home with lots of raspberry loot, so we should have plenty of leftovers to snack on. Yum!

One week anniversary

Yesterday marked our one week anniversary of living in Seattle. Woo! The weather is sunny and 70 degrees right now and we have a beautiful weekend ahead of us. I’m glad we aren’t dealing with the heat that the rest of the country is putting up with. 😉

The view outside our apartment

The view outside our apartment (taken from outside of the apartment)

We haven’t blogged in a few days, so I’ll fill you in on what’s been happening. Nick is still very happy at his job and he *loves* the public transportation here. I think he’s planning on writing a blog post about it soon. My ORCA card came in the mail today, so I’ll be able to start using public transportation soon, too.

On Wednesday, I visited Mom and Amanda at their house. We went out to lunch at Grand Central Bakery and then I spent a few hours going through boxes of my old things at Mom’s. For dinner, Nick and I had thai food from Marlai Thai. Last night, Nick and I went out to dinner at Boom Noodle with my friend, Danika. We tried to go to Trophy Cupcakes for dessert, but they were closed. Aww! There have sure been lots of social activities and eating out for the two of us homebodies! We’re having fun trying new things, though. 🙂

Government building in Oslo after massive bomb explosion

Government building in Oslo after massive bomb explosion

I’ve been following the Oslo bombing and shooting throughout the day today. This morning (afternoon in Norway), a bomb exploded at government headquarters in Oslo and two hours later, there was a shooting attack at a youth camp on an island near Oslo. 7 people were killed from the bombing and 10 or 25-30 people (depending on your source) were killed from the shooting. Very sad. 🙁 Police arrested a 32-year-old Norwegian man for the shooting and believe he may also be responsible for the bombing.

Pictures of the New Apartment

Here are some pictures of the new apartment! This apartment is only 565 square feet (compared to 740 square feet at our old apartment), so we have had to be creative in finding places for our things. 😛 I think the pictures make the apartment look smaller than it feels, though.

Our New Apartment

Our New Apartment

Working from left to right, row by row:

1. This is our “not so great room.” Nick and I used to call the equivalent room at the old apartment the “great room,” but Mom giggled at us when we tried to call it that. Due to its size, it has now been deemed the “not so great room.” The pile of boxes has been slowly diminishing each day. Nick and I bought a coffee table on Sunday, but it’s still in its box for now (we didn’t think our glass coffee table would survive the move, so we didn’t bother bringing it). There are windows along the entire left wall that look out onto some pretty trees, grass, and a children’s play area. The kitchen is on the other side of the half-wall behind the couch. The ladder goes up to the…

2. Loft! This is the view of the “not so great room” from the loft. Our bedroom furniture couldn’t all fit in one room, so it’s scattered throughout the apartment. Thus, Nick’s armoire is next to the TV. We hooked up our TV, Internet, and Playstation 3 over the weekend. I think we’re waiting to find some cables before we hook up the Wii.

3. The loft is serving as our bedroom (the actual bedroom was too small). There are a few windows in the loft and there is a fair bit of room at the foot of the bed (we have a nightstand and small dresser there for now).

4. Our little kitchen! We have had to be especially creative in this kitchen because there is only one usable above-counter cabinet. There is a small cabinet above the fridge that is essentially unusable and another above the stove that has hardly any storage space and I can’t reach it anyway. 😉 Also, unlike the old apartment, we don’t have a pantry. We found a nice bookshelf at Dania that we wanted to use as a makeshift pantry (and, later, as a bookshelf… once we found a house), but they were on backorder until September. 🙁 So we bought a five-tier shelving unit from Storables instead, which sits in the entryway.

5. This is our office, which was supposed to be the bedroom. It is quite small. 😛 Nick and I got some desks at Ikea on Sunday, because we left our computer desks behind. We have another five-tier shelving unit in the back corner for additional storage, which left just enough room for the dresser.

6. Our desks in the office. My desk is on the left (Nick’s is not set up yet) and the room ends at the left edge of my desk. There is also a small closet to my left.

Ta da! That is our new apartment. It’s small, but we like it. 🙂 We love the location – we are right next to Magnuson Park and only a short drive/bus ride from the University of Washington!

First Seattle Show

The Vain Transparent

The Vain Transparent

Nick and I went to our first show since our move to Seattle. My friend, Matt, is the drummer for a band called The Vain Transparent and they performed last night at Studio 7. I missed the name of the first band that performed, but the second band was a group from Arizona called Fight the Quiet. Nick and I had a good time and it was fun to be out doing things in Seattle at night.

This morning, I got to spend some time with my friend, Allie, who was a little banged up after a mishap that occurred while biking over here. She’ll be okay, though. 🙂 We had breakfast at Specialty’s Café & Bakery in University Village. We almost ate at the Tokyo Sweets crepe place (Japanese crepes?!), but they were closed. Aww. We’ll have to go back there sometime to try them.

Nick and I still have lots of unpacking left to do, but I’ll post pictures of the apartment a little later. And I need to find a job. 😛

Been so busy

Marie and I have been so busy. Between all the excitement at my new job and moving into our apartment we haven’t had much time to spend online. But worry not! We setup our router, we’re online and we’ll be posting some pictures of the new apartment and stories of our happenings soon.

My first day at the University of Washington

Today was my first day working at the University of Washington Information School. It has been a pretty awesome day. Marie drove me down so I wouldn’t have to pay for parking ($15/day without having assign/prepaid parking). My office is in Mary Gates Hall (previously the physics building for those who were wondering what building this is). The office is a good size for the group of people that I’ll be working with (four full time IT people and a handful of student assistants). It’s an open office with a bunch of desks and 2 nice big windows that open. I’m on a 27″ iMac with an extra 24″ monitor (even more desktop space than before or at home).

My new work home (Mary Gates Hall)

The building itself is pretty confusing, but it looks awesome and has a ton of artwork to view while trying to find your way around. I’m on the third floor but the Information School has folks on multiple floors (from garden level up to the 3rd, maybe 4th?). The weather today was pretty much perfect (70s and only slightly cloudy) except for a slight drizzle on the way home from work.

My day was pretty busy with meeting everyone, learning my way around and filling out some HR paperwork. Everyone I met seems to be really awesome and I’m very excited to get to know them all better, especially the IT team. Martin, one of my new coworkers, was an awesome tour guide who showed me around the building and gave me a quick bit of campus highlights while we walked to lunch. We ate at Schultzy’s Sausage on the Ave. I had “The Schultzy” for lunch. It’s a sausage burger with onions and bell peppers on it, and it was quite tasty.

All in all, I’m very excited to dive into work and get to know everyone in the Information School. It’s going to be quite a bit different from Wayne, but I think it’s a good different and I’m pretty geeked about getting to work in this environment.

Just heard from Nick

I just heard from Nick! It sounds like he is having a great time. He said everyone is wonderful and they went out to lunch at Shultzy’s Sausage. I can’t wait to hear more about his day when I pick him up this evening! 😀

Nick’s first day of work

I’m back at Eric’s after dropping Nick off at the University of Washington for his first day of work. So exciting! It took us just over half an hour to get there and it took me a little less than half an hour to get back. Gotta love carpool lanes. 😉

Nick is now a web developer for the iSchool (Information School), which is in Mary Gates Hall (formerly known as the Physics Building).

I haven’t heard from Nick yet (he’s been at work for an hour so far), but I’m sure he’s very busy. His coworkers are going to take him out to lunch today to celebrate. I’m very anxious to hear how his first day goes! 🙂
