Husky Stadium

Husky Stadium (UW‘s football stadium, which is “annually voted the most scenic football structure in the nation” due to its views of Lake Washington, Mt. Rainier, the Cascade and Olympic mountain ranges, and downtown Seattle) just started undergoing a significant makeover. Earlier this month, I snapped a picture of the stadium with only about 25% of the southern half of the stadium still standing (picture below; sorry it’s blurry, but I was in the car when I took it). The southern half of the stadium is now completely gone (which made Mom squeal happily, because she’s a big WSU fan). I took the other picture of the stadium last summer, while walking along the WA Arboretum Trail.

In addition to rebuilding the southern half of the stadium, they will be moving the field slightly, creating new premium seating areas, and more. They even have webcams so you can monitor the stadium’s renovation progress. 😛 The stadium is scheduled to be completed by Fall 2013, just in time for the new UW light rail station, which is suppposed to be finished in 2014. Exciting stuff!

Snow on the Ground

It is actually snowing legitimate snow now. 😛 It’s big, white, fluffy stuff – not the wet, drippy snow we had yesterday.

Snowmaggedon!!!

OMG, shut down everything! There is SNOW on the ground in Seattle! 😮

Seattle Snow

Look at all of the snow outside!

Seattleites don’t have a lot of experience with snow, so everybody takes it very seriously when there is snow in the forecast. For the last week and half, they have been talking about this weekend’s possible snow showers. They even extended the extended forecasts just to fit in this weekend’s possibility of snow, lol.

The Weather Channel says that it is 40 degrees outside right now, which explains why the very faint layer of snow on the tree outside our window is dripping. 😛

Last Night’s Sunset

Seattle Sunset

The sunset last night was amazing. Nick took the picture above when he was leaving work, but it doesn’t quite do the sunset justice. Check out KOMO’s photo gallery for more stunning sunset pictures.

My Hometown is Better Than Yours

This is a funny article someone wrote about Seattle: My Hometown is Better Than Yours

Let’s see… what have Nick and I been up to? We visited Aunt Jeannie and Uncle Gene a little over a week ago. It had been far too long since I had seen them, so it was really nice to spend time with them. 🙂

Most of last week, I was busy studying for Thursday’s on-site interview with Amazon.com. It went fairly well and I should know by the end of the week whether or not I got the job. Even if I don’t get the job, it was still a really good experience.

We helped Mom take down her Christmas tree on Saturday and then we went out to lunch with Dad. Our Christmas tree and decorations are still up for now. They make the apartment feel so cheerful. 😛

Season 2 of Downton Abbey (a British series that takes place in the early 1900’s) premiered on Sunday, which we were excited about. Nick and I don’t have cable and our antenna doesn’t pick up PBS (we’re pretty much limited to ABC, NBC, and CBS). Thankfully, PBS put the show online when it aired, so we were able to watch it right away. 🙂 Season 1 is available online, too, if you’re interested in watching it.

Happy Holidays!

We hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and thank you for the Christmas cards!

Nick and I spent Christmas with family at my grandparents’ cabin. It’s a beautiful log cabin and my favorite place to spend Christmas. 🙂 Nick and I flew out here for Christmas a few years back and it actually snowed on Christmas (many people are surprised to learn that it hardly ever snows here in western Washington)! This year, though, it rained. December has actually been a pretty dry month in Seattle, so it was a bit of a surprise to see the rain.

On Christmas Eve, we had our traditional Swedish dinner consisting of swedish meatballs, potato sausage, lefse, etc. I made the layered jello salad again, but this time, I didn’t mess it up! Yay! 😛 Nick and I also made oblaten, which is a German chocolate & wafer dessert his grandmother used to make every Christmas.

Nick, Amanda, and I also had a pre-Christmas celebration with Dad, because he was going to eastern WA for the holidays. The weekend before Christmas, we invited them over and Nick made roast beef and mashed potatoes. 😀

Nick and I got ourselves the Lord of the Rings extended edition for ourselves for Christmas, so we invited Amanda over yesterday for a LOTR marathon. We watched the Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers yesterday and Amanda and I finished off The Return of the King this morning. Each movie is roughly 4 hours long (2 Blu-ray discs each!) in the extended edition, so it took us a while to watch everything. 😉

Sorry for the text-only post. I took a few pictures on Christmas and Christmas Eve, but they didn’t turn out well. Whoops!

Magnificat and Amazon.com

Last Monday evening, Nick and I watched Amanda sing in PLU’s Christmas concert at Benaroya Hall in Seattle. Benaroya Hall is a beautiful building located in downtown Seattle and it features two glass “chandeliers” by local glass sculptor, Dale Chihuly. Amanda sang her heart out, even though she was sick. Poor Amanda. 🙁

On Thursday afternoon, I had a phone interview with Amazon.com that went pretty well. The interview was with a developer at Amazon Webstore (where I would also work, if I get offered the job). The phone interview was very technical and I think I did a good job answering his questions. After I got off the phone, though, I thought of a better solution for the last question he asked me. D’oh! I heard back from Amazon the next day and they want me do a 5-8 hour on-site interview at the beginning of January. 🙂

In other news, I created a desktop application for the University of Washington Information School IT Help Desk. When someone is experiencing a technical problem on their computer, the application lets the user submit a ticket to the IT Help Desk (and, for the IT guys, it also collects and submits relevant system information about the machine). They are really happy with the application and it is probably going to go on the lab computers within the next week or so. Very cool!

And Nick and I celebrate our 4th wedding anniversary today. 🙂

Molbak’s and Purple

Nick and I just got back from an afternoon of fun with my mom. We went to Molbak’s, which is a well-known local plant nursery in Woodinville (about half an hour away). This time of year, though, they have all sorts of Christmas ornaments, decorated Christmas trees, a large collection of poinsettias, and samples of Danish Kringle, teas, and other holiday treats. Molbak’s had a large gnome display and we were so excited when we saw it! Nick and I got a gnome that hangs from a clothespin, two short gnomes (that perfectly match our Christmas table runner!), and two cute mushroom ornaments for our tree. After Molbak’s, the three of us went to Purple Cafe and Wine Bar for lunch. It was the first time Nick and I had been there and the food was delicious! We shared a flight of cheese and then Nick got a burger with homemade smoked tomato jam (which he LOVED); I got a turkey, havarti, and bacon sandwich with an apple, walnut, and stilton salad; and Mom also got the apple, walnut, and stilton salad. Everything was really good and we left with very happy tummies. 🙂

Pictures below are of the gnome display at Molbak’s, my lunch at Purple, our short gnomes on their matching table runner, and the hanging clothespin gnome.

Happy Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving yummies

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving! Nick and I spent the holiday with about a dozen family members at my uncle’s house. I made Muddy Buddies, Andes mint cookies, and my Great Grandma’s 3-layer Jello salad. Everything tasted great, even though my Jello salad morphed into Jello soup (Sorry, everyone! Grandpa figured out what I did wrong, so it should turn out better next time).

In other news, I got myself eyeglasses over the weekend! Amanda went with me to help pick out frames and we ended up going with the first pair of frames I tried on. After my glasses were ready, I didn’t notice a difference until the guy had me turn around and read the text above the door on the far side of the store. I’m pretty sure I actually squealed as I rattled off what the text said. It was so exciting to be able to see things that were just a blur before.

Marie with glasses

Marie with glasses

After we left the store, I couldn’t stop looking at signs and comparing them with glasses on and glasses off. One sign had a bunch of dragonflies on it and said you should count the dragonflies. Without my glasses on, I could still count dragonflies… I just couldn’t read the text that suggested that I do so. 😉 I was so anxious to go home and see what it was like to watch TV with my glasses on. Wow! It was like the difference in picture quality between a standard-definition TV and a high-definition TV. Everything was suddenly crystal clear… and the eye doctor said my eyes aren’t even that bad!

Pancreatic Cancer Walk

Pancreatic Cancer Walk

On Sunday morning, Grandma and some of her friends (one of whom is a pancreatic cancer survivor) participated in PurpleStride Puget Sound, a fundraiser walk to support the fight against pancreatic cancer. It was located at Magnuson Park (right across the street from us), so Nick and I walked down to the park to cheer them on. I couldn’t believe how many people were there! There was seemingly infinite sea of people wearing purple for the event. Needless to say, that made finding Grandma pretty difficult – especially because she wasn’t familiar with the park. Nick and I had a good walk ourselves before we met up with her by the finish line.

Fall Tree Color

Pretty fall colors by our apartment

On Sunday evening, Mom called to say that she and Amanda and were going to be up in Capitol Hill for a couple hours before going to Compline at St. Mark’s Cathedral. There were so many restaurants to choose from, so I think we were all glad when Mom chose to go to Galerias Gourmet Mexican Restaurant. Mom and Amanda had soup with chicken, tomato, garlic, and lemon. Nick and I split an order of beef fajitas, which was yummy. We sat next to a strange giant pot of flowers and we shared silly stories. At one point, I started laughing because Amanda’s laughter was silly and then Mom and Nick joined in laughing… and we were all laughing because we were laughing. Perpetual laughing!

Nick and I went out to dinner with Mom and Dad last night, too. We went to Mizu Steakhouse and had hibachi dinners. It was pretty much identical to Benihana and everything tasted great.

Since Daylight Saving Time ended, it’s been getting dark starting around 5pm, so it is dark by the time Nick gets home. I guess it’s that time of year, though! At least we’ve been enjoying the beautiful fall colors. 🙂
